PROJECT: Child Haematology and Oncology Centre
CUSTOMER: Canterbury District Health Board
This project comprised the construction of an 11-bed child cancer unit within an existing building at Christchurch Hospital. After stripping back the 1200m2 footprint to its structural skeleton, Corbel carried out a full seismic upgrade and concrete repair to the main CHOC floor and basement below. Existing services, including electrical sub mains and steam pipes serving the floors above, were rerouted to accommodate the new wall layout, and the main medical oxygen header was rebuilt. All of the bedrooms were constructed to the highest hospital standards, served by HEPA filtered air supply to ensure the health of the children during their treatment. In addition to the inpatient area, the CHOC facility includes a kitchen and play area for families to use, and a large open-plan outpatient area to provide services for children who come in for daily treatment. The construction work was carried out in close proximity to adjacent hospital departments all of which had to be kept operational 24 hours per day.
